If you are planning to travel abroad, these are some of the services that Middlesex Savings Bank can provide before, during and after your trip that can make your travel a more enjoyable experience.
Please consider carrying multiple forms of payment.
- American Express Travelers Cheques, in US dollars are available at all branches. Banks and retailers in most major foreign cities are likely to accept these, but exchange rates vary widely.
- American Express Travelers Cheques, in foreign funds (in major currencies) are available through contacting our Information Center at 1-877-INFO CTR or info@middlesexbank.com.
- Foreign currency in a wide variety is available through contacting our Information Center. Many people want at least a token amount of the local currency for taxi service and tipping when they first arrive.
All foreign currency and Travelers Cheque purchases through American Express include easy instructions for the repurchase of unused Cheques or paper currency.
Foreign Wires can be used for payment of deposits on travel reservations, but it would be wise to inquire if Credit Card payment is accepted. For extended visits to a single location (i.e., students abroad) consider filling out a Telephone Transfer Authorization form for wiring before a need arises. If you need to establish an account overseas first, contact our Information Center for assistance.
Foreign Drafts, purchased through American Express, are also useful for prepaying for reservations, as well as for many other functions.
MSB Check Cards may be used for reservation deposits, but remember that your debit card has daily limits, and you may tie up your available balance with holds. Purchases made with a Debit Card share many, but not all of the benefits of Charge Card products. In countries where a VAT, or Value Added Tax, is charged, tourists may often arrange for abatement on their more substantial purchases upon leaving the country. For purchases made with a Debit Card, the reimbursement can often be credited directly to your account, avoiding the sometimes lengthy and costly foreign check collection process.
ATM Cards may be used outside of the U.S. for accessing checking accounts only. Customers who have used them while traveling have made favorable comments regarding the exchange rates they have received. Many foreign machines do not show the alpha equivalent of the numbers on the PIN keys. Memorize the numeric equivalent of an alpha PIN code.
